KUALA LUMPUR, 17 September 2010 - The Ministry of Tourism Malaysia today officially presented the "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010", in recognition of the traditionally held spirit of 'Guanxi' - a practice long held amongst Malaysians which is totally congruent with the government's 1Malaysia concept.
For Malaysians of Chinese descent, "Guanxi" describes the process of social interaction and the important dynamic for success in any relationship - a necessary component in building bridges and harmonious living among Malaysia's multi-cultural and diverse ethnic groups.
Held for the second consecutive year, the "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010" is an illuminating experience which is enjoyed by both locals and international tourists of all walks of life. It is jointly organised with the Kuala Lumpur Chinese Assembly Hall, and supported by Central Market and Kuala Lumpur City Hall.
"Malaysia's festivals symbolise and reiterate our people's unique position in respecting and sharing the beauty and joy of our cultural diversity," YB Dato' Sri Dr. Ng Yen Yen said at the unveiling of the Festival here at Central Market.
She added that the Ministry will continue to support tourism industry players and other stakeholders in promoting all aspects of cultural and religious tourism.
The "Tanglung Tourism Festival 2010" commenced with a procession of colourful lanterns from Central Market to Petaling Street, by NGOs and the public. Visitors were also mesmerised by the timeless Chinese stage play on the Legend of Houyi and Chang'er.
Other programme lined up by the organiser include the tourism's "Cuti-Cuti 1Malaysia" dance - a performance which combines various cultural dance elements unique to Malaysia. The 1Malaysia dance routine, a brainchild of YB Dato' Sri Dr, Ng Yen Yen, was first introduced to the public in December 2009.
Lantern or 'tanglung' festival is also known throughout other parts of the world as the Mid-Autumn Festival and is celebrated on the 15th day in the eight month of the Chinese Lunar calendar. Throughout the festival, a signature pastry known as the mooncake, which comes in a variety of fillings, is traditionally prepared by the Chinese specially for the occasion.
