ASEAN Underwater Mini Landmark (AUMiL) - First Underwater Cultural Heritage Exhibition In ASEAN

8 November 2021 - The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, in collaboration with the Department of National Heritage, and Universiti Terengganu Malaysia successfully launched the First ASEAN Underwater Mini Landmark (AUMiL), showcasing eleven iconic landmarks from all ASEAN Member States. This significant cultural project was approved during the 20th ASEAN-COCI Sub-Committee on Culture (20th SCC) meeting and the 8th ASEAN Plus Three Cultural Cooperation Network (8th APTCCN) Meeting in Siem Reap, Cambodia in June 2019 with a total allocation of USD 70,000 under the ASEAN Cultural Fund.

MOTAC is committed to revive the tourism and cultural sectors affected by the COVID- 19 pandemic. AUMiL will be developed as a sustainable cultural tourism product in Malaysia. Besides promoting efforts to conserve and preserve the underwater cultural heritage, it will also foster greater cultural appreciation amongst the ASEAN peoples. The programme will be conducted over the course of 5 days in conjunction with the ASEAN Seminar on Preservation and Protection of the Underwater Cultural Heritage in Bidong Island and Kuala Terengganu from 7 to 11 November 2021. Experts from ASEAN countries will convene, share and exchange knowledge and experience in managing challenges in the protection of underwater cultural heritage and archaeology during the Seminar.

The AUMiL was launched by the Honourable Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Malaysia, YB Dato' Sri Hajah Nancy Shukri in Bidong Island, Terengganu on 8 November 2021. The ASEAN Mini landmarks have been placed on the seabed at a depth of 10-15 meters in Bidong Island, namely the Petronas Twin Towers Kuala Lumpur-KLCC (Malaysia), Sultan Haji Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque (Brunei), Cambodia Independence Monument, Patuxai Monument (Laos), Indonesia National Monument, Shwedagon Pagoda (Myanmar), José Rizal Monument (Philippines), Merlion (Singapore), Wat Arun Ratchawararam Ratchaworamahawihan (Thailand) and Tran Quoc Pagoda (Vietnam).
