MALAYSIA AND MALDIVES FORGE STRONGER TIES THROUGH STRATEGIC TOURISM PARTNERSHIP

PUTRAJAYA, 28 APRIL 2025 – The Government of Malaysia, through the Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture (MOTAC), has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Government of the Republic of Maldives to strengthen bilateral relations and enhance strategic cooperation in the tourism sector. The MoU was signed in conjunction with the Official Visit of the President of the Republic of Maldives to Malaysia.

The MoU exchange ceremony was held at Perdana Putra, witnessed by YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar bin Ibrahim, Prime Minister of Malaysia and H.E. Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, President of the Republic of Maldives. YB Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan, Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, represented YB Dato Sri Tiong King Sing, Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture, during the ceremony.

This MoU outlines a comprehensive framework for collaboration in several key areas of mutual interest. These include:

• joint promotion and marketing of tourism destinations,
• exchange of expertise and capacity-building through training programmes,
• development of Muslim-friendly tourism offerings,
• advancement of business events tourism,
• promotion of ecotourism, and
• support for community-based tourism initiatives

The signing of this MoU marks a significant milestone in Malaysia–Maldives relations and reaffirms the shared commitment of both countries to promote sustainable tourism development. It also paves the way for greater engagement between public and private sector stakeholders, fostering economic opportunities and cultural exchange.

Malaysia looks forward to working closely with the Maldives in turning these aspirations into tangible outcomes that will benefit the tourism industries of both nations.
