The initiatives discuss during the Meetings underscore the importance of cultural heritage in fostering unity and cooperation in the region. This biennial Meeting brings together ASEAN Member States and its Dialogue Partners, namely the People's Republic of China, Japan, and the Republic of Korea, to strengthen cultural ties and cooperation in the arts
across the region.
This year’s chosen theme, "Bridging Cultures, Building Futures: Unity in Diversity," reflects the commitment to foster cooperation in preserving and promoting the rich cultural heritage of ASEAN. This theme covers four main ideas; (i) Celebrate cultural diversity as a unifying factor in this region; (ii) Empower youth to promote appreciation and ownership of ASEAN identity and cultural heritage; (iii) Create value for cultural assets in the creative economy; and (iv) Accelerate digitalisation in preserving and
sustaining culture and arts.
It hinges on three priority areas namely (i) Youth, (ii) Creative Economy and (iii) Digitalisation. In line with the priority area on Creative Economy, Malaysia will spearhead two key deliverables; (i) the Development of the ASEAN Creative Economy Sustainability Framework; and (ii) the Symposium on ASEAN Creative Economy, scheduled to be held early next year.
In line with our priority area on youth, MOTAC together with the Malaysian Youth Council, successfully organised the “ASEAN Youth and Heritage Forum” as a side event on 24 October 2024. There are over 200 international and local youth participants. In conjunction with AMCA and related meetings, the ASEAN Festival of Arts (AFA) will be held on the evening of 24 October 2024 in Melaka. This festival showcases the diverse cultural and artistic traditions of ASEAN Member States, providing a platform for cultural exchange and understanding. Performers from the Plus Three and Timor Leste were invited to participate for the first time.
Throughout the two years as Chairman of AMCA, Malaysia will be home to various cultural programmes and activities to invigorate the region’s cultural landscape. Melaka has been chosen as the ASEAN City of Culture 2024- 2026 with three main initiatives: (i) deepen a shared ASEAN identity; (ii) encourage the preservation and conservation of ASEAN’s cultural heritage and (iii) showcase the histories, cultures, arts and traditions of the region. International Culture and Arts Festival, the Melaka Handicraft Festival as well as the Melaka Heritage Food Festival.
