MOTAC Champions Sustainable Practices For Hotel Waste Management In ASEAN Tourism Industry

4 October 2022 - The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture of (MOTAC), in collaboration with ASEAN National Tourism Organisations (NTOs) is organising Sustainable Practices for Hotel Waste Management in ASEAN Tourism Industry Workshop from 4th to 7th October 2022. The workshop aims to promote sustainable practices in hotel waste management through training-of-trainers program.

A total of 60 participants from the ASEAN Member States, Ministries, State Governments, and Local Governments is attending the workshop. Throughout the program, the participants will be exposed to a series of lectures, group discussions, on- site training, knowledge sharing, best practices and exchange of ideas on all aspects related to sustainable and green practices in managing hotel waste.

Cottage by the Sea Langkawi, formerly known as Frangipani Resorts and Spa, the recipient of the ASEAN Green Hotel Award for the period of 2010-2011, 2012-2014 and 2016-2018 has been chosen as the venue of the workshop based on its commitment, credibility and achievements in promoting sustainable and green practices in its hotel operation.

In his opening speech, Datuk Mohd Zamri Mat Zain, Deputy Secretary-General (Tourism), MOTAC said, "The COVID-19 pandemic has provided opportunities for the tourism industry to reset, restart and recover sustainably. Therefore, our presence here today is a small step we are taking toward our journey to make ASEAN a sustainable tourism destination".

At the end of the program, MOTAC hopes that the participants would be able to implement and share knowledges and experiences learned from this workshop with the relevant parties in their respective countries and organisations on the practical solutions and green practices which can help in protecting the environment as well as providing extra benefit to the sustainability and competitiveness of the tourism industries and businesses.

At the national level, MOTAC is committed in propagating sustainable tourism in the development agenda. As such, the National Tourism Policy (NTP) 2020-2030 was developed with a transformation strategy dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism development through practising sustainable and responsible tourism. Malaysia believes that the agenda to foster sustainable and responsible tourism in the ASEAN region will be made possible with good cooperation from ASEAN Member States, local government, private sectors and the local communities.
